Guest House or Local Island Hotels
Guest houses are hotel accommodations for tourists which are
built and located on inhabited islands by locals ( islands where Maldivians
live ). The luxury amenities, facilities and services are not similar to a
island resort however, guests staying in island guest houses have the full
opportunity for watersports, diving and other activities like day fishing ,
night fishing and also excursions ( Visiting ) to uninhabited islands and
sandbanks through local dive and watersports providers in the islands. There is
a huge variety of small and big guest houses currently available throughout the
The main differences between holidaying in resorts and guesthouses are that guesthouses do not own their own island, which means guests must fully respect the local community, guests will need to be more mindful of local customs; in particular, men and women will need to dress much more modestly than on a resort.
While holidaying in guests houses, guests can make use of the public transportation along with the locals, saving one of the exorbitant travel costs for a tourist who comes to a resort spends on domestic flights , seaplane transfers and speed boat transfers which is a compulsory requirement to reach the particular island resort from the Ibrahim Nasir international airport. By staying in a local island guest house, the guests will also have the opportunity to experience the real Maldivian life on an local living island and meet , greet and interact with the locals in a friendlier atmosphere.
You cannot bring in alcohol and the only place you can buy it is on the resort islands. You will not find it available in city hotels or on the local islands or local island guest houses. Please be aware that it is actually illegal to attempt to bring it with you. All bags are Xrayed as you leave the arrivals hall and if you have any alcohol it WILL be found and confiscated (and not returned).
